SCI Adopts Policy on Captive Bred Lions (CBL)

February 2, 2018

SCI Adopts Policy On Captive Bred Lions

Considering that the practice of the captive breeding of lions for the purpose of hunting has doubtful value to the conservation of lions in the wild, and considering that such hunting is not consistent with SCI's criteria for estate hunting, the SCI Board has adopted the following policy:
  • SCI opposes the hunting of African lions bred in captivity.
  • This policy takes effect on February 4, 2018 and applies to hunts taking place after adoption of this policy and to any Record Book entry related to such hunts.
  • SCI will not accept advertising from any operator for any such hunts, nor will SCI allow operators to sell hunts for lions bred in captivity at the SCI Annual Hunters' Convention.

Awards that make us proud

We are extremely proud to announce our very own NAPHA President, Danene van der Westhuizen, as this years winner of A.P.H.A. (African Professional Hunters Association) "Ox of the Kavango" Award.
This award is very generously sponsored and presented by A.P.H.A. honorary member, Mr Fred Mannix, who is a strong believer of “conservation through wise-use. It is named after Mr Mannix’s huge buffalo shot in the Okavango Swamps of Botswana.

The award is given annually to an individual A.P.H.A. member for extraordinary work in acknowledgement of BIG GAME CONSERVATION AND ITS HABITAT. Its wider significance is to demonstrate that the leading Professional Hunters in Africa contribute immensely to the conservation of game and habitat.

Earlier this year, Danene also won the D.S.C. (Dallas Safari Club) "Outfitter of the Year Award" for Aru Game Lodges. This award is given to recognize outfitters who have continuously given exceptional support to the Dallas Safari Club.

Congratulation Danene, we are unbelievably proud to have you as one of our own.

Importation of Elephant trophies into the USA

Following this article by the Huffington Post, NAPHA attended a meeting on 31 January at the SCI Convention to obtain an update on the importation of elephant trophies from Namibia into the USA.
At present there is no indication of closure of elephant trophies into the US. We should remain optimistic and await the outcome of court findings (in regard to the importation of elephant trophies from Zambia and Zimbabwe), which could be indicative of a way forward.
It still appears to be debatable whether Present Trumps comments can be turned into policy.
We will keep you updated on further developments.
