Leopard Census - We need your help

There's no such thing as too much data when doing a research project - please remember to complete our leopard questionnaire and send it to Louisa.

Louisa and her trusted HERTZ vehicle are crossing Namibia to attend farmers meetings and auctions to gather data for the Leopard Census. We encourage all members and farmers to spread the word and let her know of any meetings or farmer gatherings that she could attend.

We would also like to appeal to our members to offer her accommodation should she be in your area, as a way of saving on expenses.

Louisa will be visiting Okahandja on the 19th of April and would need accommodation - would you be able to assist?
If you know of a self-catering unit in Windhoek which she could use at a reasonable rate please contact her directly at 081 223 0610.

Game Meat Harvesting

As part of the game meat growth strategy initiative, the School of Veterinary Medicine, UNAM, is offering training on best practices for harvesting/slaughtering of game. The training takes place over two days:

Day 1 (27 March 2018) is classroom based - and information on the wildlife sector and the processes and special requirements and procedures for the harvesting of game for the export market, including regulatory aspects, will be provided (theory).
Day 2 (28 March 2018) is a practical field day, where participants will be shown the best practice procedures for handling carcasses from shooting, eviscerating, transport to meat handling facilities and processing the carcass further. The emphasis is on applying best hygiene practices for avoiding contamination. The need for this training was identified due to the contamination issues that resulted in the end of game exports to the EU from Namibia in 2013.

To enrol, please contact Pauline Lindeque, or phone 081 127 2978.

Concessions on Auction

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) will hold an auction of trophy hunting concessions on State land for the period 2019-2020 (with the possibility for extension to 2021) on 6 April 2018, in Windhoek (the exact venue to be communicated at a later stage). Five (5) concessions will be auctioned at this event.
Concession Areas
The concession areas are located (within specified boundaries) in Mahango Core Area (part of Bwabwata National Park), Western Kavango and Mangetti National Park, Waterberg Plateau Park, Daan Viljoen and Von Bach Game Parks and the Naukluft Part of the Namib Naukluft Park.
Species included in Concessions
Species included are: buffaloes, leopard, elephant, giraffe, eland, hippopotamus, crocodile, roan and sable antelope, steenbok, kudu, oryx, lechwe, blue wildebeest, Burchell’s and Hartmann’s zebra, common impala, warthog, duiker, spotted hyaena, klipspringer, and springbok.
Pre-Registration and Registration
Registration for bidders will be restricted to Namibian registered companies in good standing, owned by or having in its employment a Namibian registered professional hunter. All interested companies are required to pre-register during the period of
19 March - 4 April 2018 to qualify for the auction.
Pre-registered companies will be given the draft contract and more information on concessions.
Special incentives will be offered to promote black economic empowerment in the trophy hunting industry.
For concessions including elephants and buffaloes, the professional hunter must be registered for trophy hunting of big game and employed temporarily or permanently by the bidding company.
Registration will take place from 09h00-10h30 A. M. on the auction date, and the auction will commence at 11h00 A. M.

We would like to remind our members to renew their game fence registrations. Please see the below extract of the Nature Conservation Ordinance, which was featured in our Newsletter dated 13 October 2017. It gives an overview of fees and their period of validity.

Support Krieghoff

Founded in Europe (Thüringen) in 1886 by Ludwig Krieghoff, Krieghoff has become a household name for many in the hunting and sport shooting community. Although originally exclusive to Germany, Dieter Krieghoff expanded to the United States 100 years after its founding.
Nowadays, Krieghoff quality arms are renowned for their exceptionally crafted and beautifully engraved designs.

Krieghoff has been a generous sponsor of NAPHA for a number of years and have continually shown their support toward the NAPHA AGM's and both HUAP (Hunters-United-Against-Poaching) Auctions.
We are truly grateful for this outstanding support and look forward to many years of great cooperation.
Krieghoff's brand new logo was released a short while ago. Sincere congratulations on this smart new look.
